KBR's Houston Offices Collect Hundreds of Books for Wounded Veterans
Recently, KBR partnered with the American Red Cross’ Veterans Hospital program in Houston to undertake “A Hero Needs a Story” book drive. Book collection boxes were installed in the KBR lobby and KBR employees were notified about the book drive. It didn’t take long before the collection boxes were overflowing. KBR employees had gone above and beyond, personally contributing hundreds of books in only a matter of days.

KBR employee Taneshia Hurd works in the KBR lobby and was amazed at the quantity and variety of books KBR employees donated. “I was truly inspired by the generosity of so many KBR employees who brought books in. So many different people brought books and some were making two or three trips to their car because they had such big loads of books for the veterans,” Hurd said.
Once all the books were collected, KBR volunteers spent the morning sorting and delivering all the books to patients of all ages in the spinal cord injury wing at Michael E. Debakey Veterans Hospital in Houston. Many veterans at the hospital have suffered immobilizing traumatic injuries and a new book can be a valued source of enjoyment for those unable to move about for weeks or months at a time.
The Red Cross and the veterans receiving the books could not have been more appreciative of KBR employees’ generosity. David Carpentier, Regional Manager, Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross said KBR’s commitment and support is vital to the programs’ success and provides much-needed comfort to those injured veterans confined to the hospital often times for lengthy stays.
“KBR employees’ generous book donations will brighten the day of so many hospitalized veterans recovering from surgery or treatment,” Carpentier said. “The donations will bring a little pleasure to the veterans who have given so much for our country.”
