The prospect of relocating internationally might seem daunting to some, but the experiences of growing up in South Africa, moving to the U.K. in her pre-teens, and studying abroad in Germany had primed Rebecca “Bex” Lewis for such a move. Bex joined KBR in 2016 as a communications assistant for Government Solution International, working out of the Leatherhead office. Her role quickly evolved to also support the Integrated Solutions International business. Then, in July 2022, she received a call that changed the trajectory of her career at KBR and her life.
“KBR’s vice president of Global Marketing and Communications was on the line proposing a new opportunity for me in Houston, Texas, with the Integrated Solutions Americas business,” Bex said. “I was already used to living in different countries and have always enjoyed the anticipation that comes with those kinds of big changes, so I was really excited to tell my husband about the opportunity. We both agreed that we wanted to make this chance a reality and to set out on a new adventure together.”
With such big relocations come many challenges and administrative tasks. Fortunately, KBR’s Global Mobility team was with Bex every step of the way.
“There were a lot of spinning plates involved, such as securing the appropriate visas and renting out our apartment, but Global Mobility was helpful and made the process much smoother,” Bex said.
Now firmly established in Houston, Bex is looking forward to growing her career at KBR and encourages others to chase after similar opportunities if they’re available.
“I’m committed to developing my career with KBR Global Marketing and Communications,” she said. “There are always exciting projects going on, and I’m grateful to be working for a company that has an awesome culture, great people and challenging but meaningful work. If the circumstances allow, say ‘Yes’ to relocation. The learning experience is worth it!”
